This book is a fun, and original new view on Dragons. Linden Rathan is a WereDragon in search of a soultwin (read mate). He's the youngest, even at six centuries, at six centuries, and is called to sort out human problems. The humans, however, have other plans. They want to capture a DragonLord, find out all their secrets so the weredragons can be destroyed. This is a tale of adventure with a twist of romance, and a must read for any fantasy guru.
This was a "lose sleeper"... Just could not wait to see if Linden gets his girl. It was nice to see that the bad guys and gals were not of an omnipotent breed and to see them blow it was great! Being a spatial type I would have liked a map so I could 'place' where things occured, but this was not a requirement to the story...I liked the characters and the story moved along a nice pace..The sequel has started out with another batch of 'Oriental' like baddies that cast a new shadow over Linden and Maurynn's future. Looks like more sleepless nights.....Just what I like
I was eager to read this book b/c it had been well received by readers.
From my perspective, the book was so slow moving, I exclaimed "get on with it" several times. The last 100 to 150 pages described the expected ending. The struggle between "good" and "evil" was not crisp. I was not certain when "good" entered the struggle. Enough said . . .
The Last Dragonlord has Fantasy, Romance, Comedy, Bleeping Were-Dragons, Court Intrigue, Action, and all the works. It is a SERIOUSLY UNDER APPRECIATED Gem. I fell in love if Bertins world i only wish she had written more of this universe. i seriously have two copy's one for myself and one to lend to anyone i can tell about it.
If you like dragons and magic, this is the book for you! I'm normally not one to read books on dragons, until one of my friends read a part of this book to me, the part where one of the dragonlords initiated Change from human to dragon. This alone caught my attention and I absolutely HAD to get this book.
There are great moments in the book. It's called the Last Dragonlord because one of the dragonlords is, indeed, the last. He has no soultwin and has to spend the rest of this long years alone.
Most of the book is about his search for his soultwin. And the story itself will keep you guessing until the very end. If you love magic, dragons, mystery, romance, edge of your seat suspense, it's all in this book.
And if you think this is good, get the next book, Dragon and Phoenix! ^_^
I am actually reading this fantasy as a prequel to "Dragon and Phoenix," which turned out to be one heck of a read, one with interesting characters and a colorful world. I had to find the original opening to Bertin's Dragonlord series. The "Last Dragonlord" takes the reader into the world of noble Dragonlords, creatures with both human and dragon forms marveled by truehumans. The main protagonist, Linden Rathan is on a mission to the kingdom of Cassori on a diplomatic mission to negotiate with various lords who regard dragonlords unfavorably, blah, blah... On the sidelines is an evil magician who mercilessly sacrificed a child to unleash dark magic upon the nobility for reasons I have yet to discover. I don't know the rest of the story since I've only started, but I can already tell this will page a nonstop ride that I won't put down till the end. Joanne Bertins writing style and story-building feels right at home with the likes of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" saga.
I'll admit I struggled to follow the characters at first. I had to get a notebook and keep track of everyone and the interchanging names/titles. Once I wrote my references I stayed up until 3 in the morning with this book. I read it every chance I got. I couldn't put it down! I've ordered the next 2 and can't wait to get my hands on it.
