Song of a Captive Bird A Novel Jasmin Darznik Books

I just finished this book and wanted to share my thoughts. I am frankly in awe of the way Jasmin Darznik has charted the path of this iconic Iranian woman making the reader feel empathy and admiration and a desire to travel with Forugh through the many twists and turns that were her life. Her telling blends the best parts of history, fiction and romance. The way she has woven the tapestry of Farough’s life is brilliant. Even in the end I felt as though I walked beside this warrior woman as she stayed true to her beliefs. I wanted to root for her audacious behavior at the same time I admired her inherent passion for the culture from which she came. The character of Lelia and the intense bond and impact on Farough’s life was dynamic. The contrast between her first relationship with Parviz and later Darius was interesting and demonstrated her emotional growth. This is a great read!

Song of a Captive Bird A Novel Jasmin Darznik Books Reviews

This is probably not a book I would typically pick up but I am so glad I did. This was story of an independent, strong willed woman living in a country and a time when being those things was practically impossible. This was such well written and engaging story.
This is a gorgeously written book, and the story it tells of the life of this important Iranian poet is urgent and inspiring. Set against the backdrop of the troubled times in the fascinating country she clearly loves, Darznik's Forugh draws us into the imperfect world she navigates. She's a compelling character, brave and unflinching, yet not without vulnerability and self-doubt. Because she's fully realized and comes to life on the page, we feel what it must have been like to have been this incredible girl and woman, pushing against a culture and mores that tried to quiet her. There's triumph yes, but sadness and heartache for Forugh, and because Darnik is a masterful storyteller full of empathy and exquisite prose, hers is a story impossible to forget.
This book has inspired and stirred curiosity and creativeness, beautifully forcing me to read and learn more about Forugh Farrokhzad's work as an author and filmmaker, but also about her life as a woman born and living her life as an independent woman in the 1950's. Darznik is truly an amazing, gifted, and beautiful writer. I read this book in merely 4 days, and hardly could put it down. I am in love with this book, recommend it 5 stars, and surely will read it again from time to time.
Review from my mother
"Jasmine Darznik presents the reader with a fascinating, engrossing and spell-biding novel on Forugh Farrokhzad. the book compels the reader to delve deeper into Forugh's true life story, poetry and ideals. The book was literally a page-turner; after each page I read, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next."
I loved this book. My husband was born in Iraq, and his mother was an Iranian. It is so interesting to me, to read what was happening in the Middle
East from that time period. Thank you. Sukran
I am reading Song of A Captive Bird for the second time now. Though there are many beautiful scenes in it which color my concept of another time and world I wish I understood better, though the author has intensely researched and richly portrayed the historical setting, though she has created a believable childhood and maturation for Forough Farokhzad, whose poetry I have long loved, it is undeniably a challenging book to read.

Misogyny and the double standard that oppresses and penalizes women because of their gender is a part of our communal past and present, and it is our responsibility to understand it. Forough Farokhzad was a trailblazing feminist who shocked her patriarchal society into recognizing the power of her humanity. Jasmin Darznik, in her masterful use of fiction to convey a painful reality, has written a book to be read by all. She has created a powerful experience that reminds us how dangerous sexism can be, and inspires us to strive like Farokhzad and Darznik to sing.
Iran during the 1950s and 1960s under the Shah’s ruling was an interesting place. This book reveals how things weren’t as they seemed. Women of various classes were treated differently and social status determined if women were allowed to speak their mind. I enjoyed the cultural knowledge gained from this read but the main female character who abandoned her child to pursue her own ambitions and then blamed others for her loss of mother and son relationship just couldn’t arouse any sympathy from me.
