I've been a fan of Lackberg's books since the beginning, and for the most part, they've been pretty good. Like any other long running series, there have of course been some hits and misses. Some were really good, some average. But for the most part, they have been pretty good. Even the last none, the ninth book in the series, was one of the best, in my opinion. That's impressive. Instead of running low on steam and recycling old ideas, she found a way to write a book that felt fresh, with an intriguing mystery, great characters, and a nice development of the main cast. All in all, the last book was great. Even the ending was both surprising and satisfying.

So what happened? The mystery this time around sounds fun. A 4 year old girl disappears from a farm 30 years ago, and are found dead later. Skip ahead until the present, and another 4 year old girl disappears from the same farm, and is found dead in the same place. Interesting, to say the least. Is there a connection there? How can it be, after all these years? How can it not be? Same farm, same age, found in same place? Interesting.

The problem is after this little intro, the story quickly runs out of steam. Or stories, to be precise. There are tons of small stories here that feels entirely unrelated, including a story set in 1672, of all things. Why it's there, I have no idea. The characters introduced in the book are consistently boring and don't develop much at all, and not much happens through the entire book. I am doing my best to avoid spoilers, so all I will say about the story is that it feels like she had a great premise going on, but after a while, Lackberg realized she had no idea what to do with it. So she just kept writing it, hoping for the best. Eventually she started running low on pages, so she came up with a ridiculous way to end it all in a hurry. And I mean hurry. Not much of any of this makes sense, and many loose ends are brushed over for no real reason. She even goes so far as to use the same "shocking revelation" *twice*, for two seperate characters. That's how bad it is.

So again... what happened? Why does this book exist? That's the real mystery here. If you have read all the other books in the series and can't get enough, this does have the occasional fun parts. Even if they are few and far between. But this book can easily be skipped. It doesn't have a good mystery going on, the characters doesn't evolve much at all, and while there is a minor status quo update for some characters, it's hardly anything important. If you skip this and go straight for the next one (if she writes another), you won't have missed much.

Just as enthralling as most books by the author.

Was at home down with the flu and the book made that almost enjoyable. )
Camilla is one of my favorite writers. Her books are always great. I loved this one, but think the historical parts could have omitted and not harmed the main story.
This is another great novel by Camilla Lackberg, it is amazing how stories are told and connected. The story develops at a nice pace, building suspence. It was hard to put down. One of her best.
The novel, as all the works by Lackberg, follows the same structure and is a joy to read. The plot ends so quickly Without giving enough reasons for resolving the killings in those ways
Camila Lackberg writes brilliantly suspenseful novels. I have enjoyed the series. I highly recommended her books to those who enjoy women authors, Swedish mysteries and good series.
Camilla Lackberg writes the best mysteries. I can never figure out who has committed the crime. I like all her main characters!
This was a very hard book to read - very dark, even for Lackberg.
