It may seem a surprising claim, but some of the most brilliant and original critics of modernity have been shaped by Christianity. In Subversive Orthodoxy, Robert Inchausti maps out a tradition of twentieth century thinkers-including philosophers, activists, and novelists-whose "unique contributions to secular thought derive from their Christian worldviews." Inchausti revisits the lives and work of a stunning array of well-known Christian thinkers as well as figures not often thought of as Christian. From Walker Percy to Dorothy Day, Jacques Ellul to Marshall McLuhan, Inchausti offers a fascinating who's who of what he calls the "orthodox avant-garde." Subversive Orthodoxy will be an informative and encouraging read for pastors, laypeople, and students concerned about the Christian response to secular ideologies.

Subversive Orthodoxy Outlaws Revolutionaries and other Christians in Disguise eBook Robert Inchausti

I have an old paperback first edition, and recently bought the kindle version to re-read it. It's a wonderful, challenging book (although Inchausti sometimes gets a little deep in the weeds with rarified post-modern criticism terminology - the first two sections are at least superb). Very worthwhile reexaminations of Blake, Chesterton, Dostoevsky, Pasternak. Solzhenitsyn, Kerouac, and Day.

However, the publisher did an awful job of scanning a paper copy of the book and running it through a clunky Kindle conversion tool. No active TOC, footnotes are scattered throughout wherever they would have happened to sit at the bottom of a printed page, breaking paragraphs willy-nilly. It's readable, but annoying. The book deserves much better, and the quality is much more in keeping with a free Gutenberg scan than a $9.99 publisher's product. Linking the TOC, formatting chapter headings, and linking footers is an hour or two's grunt work at most, and should have been done.

Subversive Orthodoxy Outlaws Revolutionaries and other Christians in Disguise eBook Robert Inchausti Reviews

It is probably unfair for me to review this book as I was asked recently by the author to write the forward. None the less, I was a huge fan and loved this book long before I even met Mr. Inchausti. This is a book that has everything scholarship, a refreshing point of view, and brilliant insights. It is timeless wisdom for these times.
