It seems the dogs we know are much more than we think. These domesticated “pets” are actually two races of aliens here on earth to follow their duties, honor Kax and mine the earth for jex they could send back to their home planet. Clem is a young puppy finding his purpose and doing his best to honor his alien heritage. The story from there goes into an exciting journey in Clem’s early life. He discovers there is more to his world and his purpose with his alien counterparts and humans than he thought. When he bonds with a new human couple who rename him Raffle his whole life is changed.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and it’s a great thing to finish and realize the story is not over. I can follow it more with the next book in the series. The ideas behind the story at first seem odd but really work. The two alien dog groups, big and little, being at odds and working for the same goal but against one another makes for funny scenes.
When I got to the end and read the author’s notes realizing a lot of the story was drawn from her real life it made it even better.

I spotted this on a Book Barbarian promo, and with my love of all things animal and sci-fi, how could I turn it down?
In Dog Aliens, Clem is not a dog, but rather a Kaxian, an alien race that looks exactly like Earth dogs and is living on earth to mine for Jex. Jex is a mineral that humans don’t need but is intensely important to the Kaxian – and to the Niques, another race of dog aliens who will do anything in their power to stop the Kaxian from getting the Jex.
This sounds like a setup for an epic animal story via Erin Hunter’s Warriors or Kathryn Lasky’s Guardians of Ga’Hoole, but really it’s the tale of Clem as he goes on various little adventures, from finding a new family once he’s abandoned by his original owner, escaping from his new careless owner, trying to get adopted from a shelter, fending off pesky cats and Niques – and figuring out his strange new ability to influence minds by projecting “mind movies” onto them.
The story lacks direction because of this episodic structure, but I doubt this will matter for its target audience, which is young middle schoolers and people who just love to read about dogs. For those readers, it’s fun to see earthly dog habits explained in Kaxian terms Dogs dig all the time because they’re mining for Jex; they eat Jex to carry it, poop it to deliver it, and eat it again to carry it further if needs be. Not all of the content has earth dog parallels, though Kaxians, for example, have multiple lives (as cats are reputed to, not dogs), and the book never establishes why exactly Jex is so important.
This may detract from the enjoyment of picky readers (Personally, I wanted more details about nearly all nontraditional elements of the story). Others who are looking for a quick, clean read, though, will enjoy it. The book is clear from the beginning that it’s a gentle read, with page one clearly stating that no dogs die, and in general it’s pretty tame, though there is one scene where a bad owner threatens to hit a dog with a frying pan and another wherein a dog in a shelter hopes that it won’t send him to his next life (i.e. implying he’s in a kill shelter).
Ultimately, it’s a quick, fun read for fans of talking animal adventures.
Dog Aliens #1 Raffle’s Name
I was given the opportunity to review this book for free in anticipation of the release of the second book. As a dog lover, I was intrigued by the title and couldn’t pass it up.
The author Cherise Kelly was very imaginative in allowing the story to be written completely from inside of the dog’s mind. You are introduced to Clem, the dog whose mind you will be a passenger of for the remainder of the story. Clem is a reincarnated alien dog from outer space. He is on his 99th life and is a 6 month old puppy. He is from the planet Kax and there is an interesting back story.
Clem has a bit of a rough start in this life and find himself in possession of some abnormal abilities. There are distinguishing alien races between the large and small dogs and the inability to effectively communicate with cats. This was a fun and light read and I could relate to many of the dog/cat interactions.
The Kaxians (alien dogs from Kax) have come to Earth to spend their lives mining Jax. Jax is also needed for the Niques (the small dog breeds). This results in them being at odds with one another.
The cons for me What in the heck is Jax? Having no idea what this was or what it would do for the Kaxians was really annoying. All you know when reading is that it is very important and their life’s work but by the end of the story you are none the wiser. There was a bit of jumping around in the story without cohesive flow between ideas. The wolves for example are telling a story and then it shifts back to Clem and later back to the wolves and to an almost exact same dialogue. As I was reading on my kinlde I had to shift back and forth a couple of times to be sure that I was actually reading a new passage and not getting shifted back to an earlier part within the story. There were too many loose ends at the end of the story and things to wonder about. It didn’t feel like anything really got resolved by the end of the story. It was apparent that another story would follow, but it shouldn’t involve every single issue from the first book (in my humble opinion). Give your reader a tiny bit of relief or you will lose them.
Pros Very imaginative. Quick and easy to read, very good for a light read. If you are an animal owner (especially dog or cat) you should be able to see something of your own pet within these characters. There is now a sequel so that hopefully some of the unanswered questions will bear fruitation within the second installment. It is very fun to read from inside the mind of an alien dog.
All in all I recommend it for a filler book, I give it 3/5 starts. It doesn’t have a lot of re-readability but the story is intriguing enough to want to continue on with the series.
